Official
Brisbane Community Garden Agreement
November, 1999 / Revised December,
2004
The
Brisbane Community Garden is a non-profit,
all volunteer group of gardeners engaged
in the growing of plants for their
own use. The gardeners volunteer their
time to maintain the garden and the
grounds in a condition acceptable
to the City of Brisbane (the land
owner and sponsor) and the other participating
gardeners.
As
the sponsor, the City of Brisbane
will provide all water, storage for
tools, bark chips for walking paths,
and regular trash collection and green
waste recycling of plant materials
that are not readily composted (tree
limbs, large stalks, invasive plants.).
Fees
· Each plot will rent for $40
a year with a one-time, $5, refundable
key deposit.
· Gardeners will make a one
year commitment and those who drop
out before a year will not have any
part of their $40 refunded.
· Plots are nontransferable.
Safety
& Security
· All gardeners will agree
to sign a waiver of liability.
· Use of weed killer is prohibited.
The exploration and use of non-chemical
fertilizers and pest control are encouraged.
Pesticides
that are toxic to pets are prohibited.
· Children must be supervised.
· Tools must be stored safely
and securely. It will be assumed that
any tools left in the garden shed
are “communal” and may
be used, but not removed, by any/all
gardeners. The exception would be
tools used during community beautification
projects, which would require notification
to the gardeners group.
· The gate must be kept closed
and locked when the garden is unattended.
Courtesy
· The hours will be sunrise
to sunset.
· No music/radios unless it
is through headphones.
· All gardeners must agree
to respect neighbors, fellow gardeners,
and their property - especially hoses.
· Please remember to shut water
off completely when done watering.
· Planters may only be placed
on the horizontal pathway adjacent
to your plot.
· Walkways must remain navigable.
Overhanging plantings that restrict
movement in pathways must be removed.
· Invasive plants such as blackberries,
raspberries, mint, bamboo, etc. are
not allowed. Trees or large perennials
are also considered invasive.
· Pets must be kept on leash
and contained in the specified areas
allowed. If a gardener raises objection
to your pet’s presence, you
must remove you pet.
Expectations
· Individual plots and surrounding
pathways must be maintained (free
of weeds, etc.) The upper horizontal
pathway and the vertical pathway right
of your plot is your responsibility.
· Maintenance is required year
round. Year round growing is encouraged
and is possible in our micro climate.
Use of cover crops during winter months
is encouraged.
· Should a plot appear abandoned
or neglected for more than 30 days,
the renter will be contacted and risks
losing
his/her plot. A specific deadline
for compliance will be given. After
which, if not in compliance, the gardener
will lose their plot.
· Temporary care of your garden
for vacation or illness is available.
Please contact the Gardeners Group
and they will be happy to assist you.
· All gardeners must donate
time and labor on a regular basis
to special and recurring garden projects.
A list and signoff sheet of these
duties is posted on the outside notice
board. Any gardener who does not sign-off
on a duty within a 30 day period will
be notified and will risk losing his/her
plot.
· Specific committees to accomplish
tasks will be established. Joining
a committee is encouraged and will
help to make the work easier and less
time consuming.
· The garden as a whole should
appear productive and attractive all
year round.
Membership
· First come-first served basis,
with preference given to Brisbane
residents.
· The overflow will be put
on a waiting list.
· As plots become vacant, they
will first be made available to participating
gardeners who may want to move. The
waiting list applicants will be admitted
based on original date of application.
Organization
· A volunteer Gardeners Group
will be established. Meetings of the
Group will be held on less frequently
than 4 times a year. Attendance of
these meetings is open to all.
· A Notice Board of projects
and jobs will be created and located
outside the shed.
· Further information on committees
and other communication will be posted
inside the shed. Please check this
on a regular basis.
· The garden monitor and city/garden
liaison, Cynthia Zink, is the person
to contact with questions or concerns
regarding the garden.
